We would like to make you aware of some important legal information related to boating and fishing in Costa Rica to make your stay with us as easy and enjoyable as possible. Following you will find important information concerning your entrance into Costa Rican waters and Los Sueños Marina.
REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER THE COUNTRY (during the COVID-19 pandemic)
NOTE: As of November 1, all travelers worldwide are welcome to visit Costa Rica.
1. Complete the health form entitled PASE DE SALUD available here https://salud.go.cr.
2. TRAVELER’S HEALTH INSURANCE – An insurance policy is required to cover lodging in the event of a quarantine and medical expenses for the COVID illness. The insurance policy may be international or purchased from Costa Rican insurance companies.
The local insurances able to offer this traveler’s health policy today are INS: https://www.grupoins.com/seguroparaviajeros and Sagicor: https://tiendasagicor.com/en/collections/todos. We suggest Sagicor as it is less expensive and the website is available in English.
For international policies, the tourist must request a certificate issued by their insurance carrier in English or Spanish, that indicates at a minimum the following three conditions:
Term of the policy effective for the duration of the visit to Costa Rica.
Coverage guaranty for medical expenses in the event of a COVID-19 pandemic illness in Costa Rica, for at least US$50,000 (fifty thousand dollars in the legal currency of the United States of America).
Minimum coverage of US$2,000 for extended lodging due to the pandemic illness.
INITIAL ENTRY INTO COSTA RICA
Upon your initial entry into the country, you will receive a Temporary Permit for your boat, called the Certificado de Importación Temporal from the Ministry of Finance and Customs (in Spanish, Ministerio de Hacienda y Aduana). This permit is valid for up to three months and can not be renewed. Once the permit has expired, you will need to leave the country, as Customs will not make any exceptions for renewal.
If you are planning to keep your boat in Costa Rica for more than three months, the vessel must apply for an extended cruising permit from the Department of Transportation Maritime Division MOPT (in Spanish, Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes MOPT).
Further details can be provided by contacting the Marina office.
As the first a government-sanctioned Marina, a slip use agreement with Los Sueños Marina will allow you to apply for an extended cruising permit. If you are just arriving to our Country, it is important for you to know as a government-sanctioned Marina; Los Sueños Marina is also considered an official port of entry; however you must contact an agent in advance (48 hours min) in order to coordinate an official visit by the corresponding government authorities.
Our suggested agent is Ernesto Andrade.
Ernesto can be reached by email at eandrade@ice.co.cr
or by telephone at (506) 2661-0948 office, or (506) 8811-7290 cell.
Local law prohibits non-Costa Rican flagged boats from operating as commercial charters. Please be aware that government authorities are very strict in this regard, and officials make regular inspections of Los Sueños Marina. Foreign vessels found chartering could be impounded.
